Small Steps to Creating Community

Ahmed Eid is on a quest to get to know at least 100 of his closest neighbors. Those who participate in this community-building project get access to the photos and short bios that Eid puts on his 100 neighbors website so that they get to know their neighbors too.

In the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, DC, three neighbors connected their yards to create an urban oasis from a few typically narrow oblong backyard city lots. The children and their pets get a larger place to play within the city; the adults get a more comfortable place to entertain and relax; and the resident gardener gets a bigger palette with which to paint with his green thumb.

Both are examples of small steps people can make to create community where they live, encouraging interaction and building trust.

What are some fun and interesting ways you build community where you live?

Eid Greetings!

Eid al Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice, is a holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael) as an act of obedience to God, before God intervened to provide him with a sheep to sacrifice instead.

May Allah accept our duas, good deeds and sacrifice during this sacred month in which millions of Muslims from all parts of the world make the pilgrimage of a lifetime: the Hajj.

The families of Good Tree Village wish you and your family a blessed and joyous Eid!
